Michael Mauboussin

Virtual Fireside Chat and Audience Q&A with Simon Brewer

Michael J. Mauboussin is Head of Consilient Research on Counterpoint Global at Morgan Stanley Investment Management. Previously, he was Director of Research at BlueMountain Capital, Head of Global Financial Strategies at Credit Suisse, and Chief Investment Strategist at Legg Mason Capital Management. He is also the author of three books, including More Than You Know: Finding Financial Wisdom in Unconventional Places, named in the The 100 Best Business Books of All Time by 800-CEO-Read. 

Michael has been an adjunct professor of finance at Columbia Business School since 1993, and received the Dean’s Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009 and 2016. He is also chairman emeritus of the board of trustees of the Santa Fe Institute, a leading center for multi-disciplinary research in complex systems theory.

Fabio heads the Focused Equity manager research team at Willis Towers Watson, leading the research efforts on concentrated, unconstrained active equity portfolios. Fabio has also been involved in long-short, quantitative and Smart Beta equity research. Fabio works with large institutional investors globally to construct and manage equity portfolios, and is part of the Investment Committee responsible for managing Towers Watson Investment Management’s Global Equity Focus Fund. 

Fabio is the equity research specialists to the Portfolio Management Group, involved in managing discretionary portfolios for Willis Towers Watson fiduciary clients. Prior to joining Willis Towers Watson in 2006, Fabio worked with JPMorgan Asset Management in its multi-manager division. He previously worked as a sell-side analyst at Banca IMI, part of Intesa San Paolo. Fabio has a MSc in Economics and Finance from the Bocconi University in Milan and is a CFA charterholder.

Dr Ian Mortimer, CFA Ian joined Guinness Asset Management in 2006 and is portfolio manager on the Guinness Global Equity Income Fund . Prior to joining Guinness, Ian completed a D.Phil. in experimental physics at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and graduated in 2006. Ian graduated from University College London with a First Class Honours Master’s degree in Physics in 2003. He is a CFA Charterholder.

Sunil Thakor

Sunil H. Thakor, CFA is a Research Analyst and a Co-Portfolio Manager of the Sands Capital Global Leaders and International Growth strategies. Sands Capital is an active, long-term investor in leading innovative growth businesses, globally. Mr. Thakor joined Sands Capital in 2006 and has held responsibilities for company research in a variety of sectors, including leading the research efforts of the firm’s Global Financial Services Sector Team. In 2008, Mr. Thakor helped develop the firm’s first global portfolio as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Global Growth strategy. 

He later helped create and launch Global Leaders (2017) and International Growth (2018), and serves as a Co-Portfolio Manager of both strategies. Mr. Thakor earned a BA from Colby College (1999) and an MBA at Columbia University (2006).

Rob Rohn

Rob is a co-Founding Principal, Analyst and Portfolio Manager on the SGA Investment Committee. He also sits on SGA’s Executive Board. Since starting the firm, Rob has been co-manager of SGA’s US Large Cap Growth and Global Growth Flagship Portfolios, from their respective composite inceptions (2000 and 2010).  In addition, he is part of the three portfolio manager team that started and currently manages both the SGA Emerging Markets Growth and Global Mid-Cap Growth Portfolios (inception years 2015 and 2019, respectively).

Rob has also had oversight over SGA’s research functions involving our Investment Committee, coordinating the IC scheduled meetings and company discussion topics and balancing the workload of coverage among all analysts. Prior to co-founding SGA, Rob was a portfolio manager and principal with W.P Stewart & Co, Ltd., a firm noted for managing large-cap, high quality growth stock portfolios. During Rob’s twelve-year tenure with W.P. Stewart, he was CEO of the firm’s core U.S. investment business and before he resigned, Chairman of the Management Committee. From 1988 through 1991, he was a Vice President with Yeager, Wood & Marshall, Inc., where he was a member of the Investment Policy Committee with responsibilities in equity analysis and portfolio management.  Rob began his career in 1983 at J.P. Morgan where he was an officer in Corporate Finance. Rob has a B.A. (Cum Laude) from Dartmouth College and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.

Simon Steele

Simon Steele is Head of the Fiera Atlas Global Companies Team. Simon joined Fiera in March of 2021 as part of Fiera’s acquisition of AMP Capital’s Global Equities capability. Simon has more than 28 years of industry experience with much of it dedicated to the management of UK and Global equity portfolios across a wide range of mandates for institutional, charity and retail investors. 

Simon started with AMP Capital in June of 2016 to oversee and develop AMP Capital’s Global Equities capability. Previously Simon was the lead Fund Manager at Sarasin & Partners for the Global Equity High Yield, Global Dividend and International Income funds managing total assets of £1.4bn. Prior to that he spent 6 years with CCLA as Investment Director, Equities, where he was the Fund Manager in charge of global equity selection for the firm’s global equity income funds, flagship Common Investment Funds and segregated institutional mandates, with a combined £2bn allocation to equities. Prior to joining CCLA, Simon worked for the Royal Bank of Scotland where for 6 years he was head of stock selection for Adam & Co, and latterly the Pan European Head of Equities for RBS wealth, incorporating both Adam & Company and Coutts & Co. Simon is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute for Securities and Investments.

Gabrielle is a Director of Troy and a Non-Executive Director of Witan Investment Trust. She is also a Trustee of the charity Launch It.

Gabrielle graduated from University College Dublin gaining a BA in History and Economics and an MA in Economics. She holds the ASIP qualification and is an Associate Member of the CFA Society of the UK. Prior to joining Troy 10 years ago, Gabrielle was a Senior Managing Director at Lazard Asset Management where she was responsible for Global and European portfolios. Spending the early years of her investment career focussed on European equities at a time of significant political and economic change, Gabrielle’s focus has been on strong franchise companies that earn high returns on capital.

Jeff Mueller

Mr. Mueller joined Polen Capital in 2013. Mr. Mueller is co-portfolio manager of the Global Growth strategy. Prior to joining Polen Capital, Mr. Mueller spent 10 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, during which he flew over 250 combat missions in F/A-18s. 

Mr. Mueller received his B.A. in Communications and Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio where he was Captain of the Men’s Tennis Team, an All American and NCAA Champion. Mr. Mueller is a Tillman Scholar and earned his M.B.A. from Columbia Business School where he was a graduate of the Value Investing Program. He graduated from Columbia with honors and distinction.

Eric Woodworth is Deputy CIO, Portfolio Manager and Analyst at DSM Capital Partners. Eric joined Price Waterhouse Coopers in 1994 as a technology consultant. He became a team leader and managed projects for PWC in Toronto and Chicago. 

He also served as an internal instructor for PWC in Tampa, Florida. Eric left PWC in 1999 to attend business school, spending his summer in equity research at Merrill Lynch. Eric holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Williams College, an MBA in Finance from New York University, and a Chartered Financial Analyst designation. Eric joined DSM in 2001.

Christopher Rossbach

Christopher Rossbach is a Co-Founder, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer of J. Stern & Co., a private investment partnership with $1.2 billion assets under management based in London and Zurich. Chris is also the Portfolio Manager of the Firm’s World Stars Global Equity Fund.

Stern invests with a long-term, fundamental, value-based approach and manages money for families, trusts, charities, endowments, institutions, and other long-term investors.  Together with Jérôme Stern, Chris co-founded Stern in 2012.  Before that, Chris founded Merian Capital where he was Managing Partner and Portfolio Manager.  Previously, he was Head of Magnetar Capital’s European operations and Investment Analyst at Lansdowne Partners and Perry Capital.  Before moving to London, Chris started his career in investment banking at Lazard Frères in New York. Chris holds a BA from Yale University, where he was a Humanities major, and a MBA from Harvard Business School.  He is Chair of the Warburg Charitable Trust of the Warburg Institute and a member of the Investments Committee of the University of London, both in London, and a member of the Atlantik-Brücke, an association of German business and political leaders, in Berlin. 

 

Denis Callioni

Denis Callioni joined Comgest in 2015 and is an Analyst and Portfolio Manager specialising in European equities. She co-leads the Europe Smaller Companies and Europe Opportunities strategies, contributes to idea generation and researches European companies within a broad range of sectors. Denis started her career in 2010 as an equity Analyst at Kempen & Co Merchant bank in Amsterdam.

 

She holds a Master’s degree in Corporate Finance and Banking from Duisenberg School of Finance (the Netherlands) as well as a Master’s degree in Business and Economics obtained from the University of Amsterdam. Denis is a CFA® charterholder.

He is also the portfolio manager for the North American Equity Fund, responsible for its construction and performance. He has a Masters degree in Physics from the University of Oxford and a doctorate in Biomechanics from the University of Cambridge. He passed the Investment Management Certificate in 2012.

Eric Schoenstein

Eric is chairman of the Investment Committee and coordinates the fundamental research conducted across the investment team. Eric spent nearly fourteen years with Arthur Andersen LLP, as a Senior Audit Manager, providing a wide variety of services to clients of all sizes in both the public and private sectors.

He earned a BS in Business Administration, with a focus in Accounting, from Oregon State University. Eric is currently serving as a trustee for the Oregon State University Foundation and is a past president of the Oregon State University Alumni Association. He serves as a director for the Western Golf Association, which administers and oversees the Evans Scholars Foundation and serves on the Executive Committee for the Oregon Golf Association, currently as its Treasurer and immediate past President.

Martin Hermann joined Berenberg in 2017 and is portfolio manager of the Global Focus Fund. Martin began his career in 2010 at Allianz Global Investors where he served as a portfolio manager and vice president within the award-winning Europe Equity Growth Team. His responsibilities included deputy fund management of the International Equity Growth Fund. Martin holds a Masters in Investment Analysis and Corporate Finance from the University of Vienna and is a CFA Charterholder.

Tom joined Jennison in 2011 as a global equity portfolio manager. He was previously with Loomis Sayles for 11 years, most recently as a co-portfolio manager of global equity portfolios. He began his tenure at Loomis as a research analyst. Prior to Loomis, Tom was a global equity research analyst at Putnam Investments. Tom received a BA in economics from Dartmouth College and an MBA from Duke University.

Matthew graduated from New College, University of Oxford, with a Master’s Degree in Physics. He is a CFA Charterholder.

Stephen Yiu

Stephen Yiu is the Chief Investment Officer at Blue Whale Capital and Lead Manager of the Blue Whale Growth strategy. Stephen co-founded Blue Whale Capital with Peter Hargreaves, co-founder of Hargreaves Lansdown, in 2016. The LF Blue Whale Growth Fund was launched in September 2017 with £25m in seed capital. It is a long-only, large-cap global equity fund focusing on developed markets.

Stephen adopts a high conviction, active approach based on bottom-up, fundamental research. The strategy has c. £1bn of assets under management. Stephen started his career at Hargreaves Lansdown before working with Tim Steer as a co-manager at New Star Asset Management (now Janus Henderson) and Artemis Investment Management. Most recently, Stephen worked under Martin Taylor and Nick Barnes at Nevsky Capital, a global long-short equity hedge fund.

Simon Brewer

Simon graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree in Economic History, and later took the advanced management programme at INSEAD, France. He started his career at Citibank in 1985, where he trained as a portfolio manager, before joining Morgan Stanley in 1989. Over the 17 years there, he managed their global balanced portfolio, was Chairman of their European Asset Allocation Committee and Chief Investment Officer. For the subsequent 14 years he has was CEO and an owner of Vantage Investment Advisory Ltd.

He is a senior advisor to Rothschild and Co, in London, a Governor of Clifton College and Chairman of their Development Trust, and served as a Trustee of Great Ormond Street Hospital. In 2019 he co-founded the Money Maze Podcast, which he hosts, an investment and business podcast that is listened to in over 80 Countries, and which is in the top 1% of global podcasts.
